Quote updates, shares and cash turnover: different volume measures

A “volume” label without units and provenance is insufficient. Price-change counts, executed share quantities and cash turnover answer different questions; a single number cannot convert one into another.

Original fictional teaching data. Text and translations were prepared with AI assistance; numerical examples were checked programmatically. No real trades were sent.

Name the unit and the coverage

In the Forex context described by MetaQuotes, tick volume counts price changes during an interval. That is a definition of a particular measure, not a claim that every message in every feed is such a tick.

Executed share volume can count shares; cash turnover sums price × quantity for each execution. Record venue, interval, currency and source coverage. Identical column names do not establish identical data across providers.

Two fictional executions

Assume a separate fictional feed with 12 quote updates. Independently specify two executions during the period: 100 shares at USD 10 and 50 at 12. These editorial numbers are neither platform observations nor an exchange tape.

Share quantity is 100+50=150. Cash turnover is 100×10+50×12=USD 1600. Updates cannot be added to shares or dollars because their units differ.

Last price does not recover turnover

The last execution price is USD 12. Multiplying it by 150 shares gives 1800, USD 200 above the specified turnover. The first 100 shares traded at 10, not 12.

The execution-weighted price is 1600/150 = 32/3 ≈ USD 10.6667 per share. This checks the complete fictional execution list; it is not derived from one Close and volume. If only closing price and quantity are available, exact turnover is unknown.

A similar bar does not establish the source

Twelve updates cannot establish share quantity, and another program’s documentation cannot establish our provider’s actual field type. A real series needs its own documentation. Its coverage may be one venue or a broader set, and one session or another.

Large executed volume over a period does not guarantee available future order size. A missing field is not a known zero. These are liquidity and data questions, not automatic trading instructions.

Check a different execution list

Suppose 40 shares trade at USD 20 and 60 at 21. What are quantity, turnover and execution-weighted price?

Answer: 100 shares, 40×20+60×21=USD 2060 and an average 20.60. Last price × quantity would give 2100, overstating by 40. Quote-update count cannot be recovered from these data.

Check the available volume field

The Student Wyckoff guide explains its available volume bars. Check data availability for your chosen symbol, then compare neighbouring closed bars on the same interval. The platform does not promise a complete trade tape, a tick feed or cash-turnover calculation.

  • Record unit, source and interval.
  • Separate quantity, cash and update events.
  • Keep unreported information unknown.

Primary sources

Sources explain the mechanics and limitations; the editorial examples use invented numbers rather than market quotations.

Your next practical step

Open the volume guide, check field availability and units, then enable volume for a suitable symbol following the instructions. Do not replace missing information with zero.
