Separate the zero line from the signal line
A common configuration subtracts the 26-period exponential moving average from the 12-period average. The signal line is usually a nine-period exponential average of those MACD values. An exponential average gives greater weight to recent observations; its initialization and available history can affect the early readings.
MACD above zero means the shorter price average is above the longer one. MACD above its signal line means the difference is above its own smoothed history. The histogram is MACD minus the signal line. A histogram crossing zero therefore marks a line crossover, not necessarily MACD crossing the zero level.
A positive histogram can shrink during an advance
Assume the 12-period average is 104 dollars and the 26-period average is 101. MACD equals 3 dollars. If the signal line is 2.40, the histogram is +0.60. On a later completed candle, suppose the averages are 105 and 101.80, giving MACD 3.20, while the signal rises to 2.90. The histogram falls to +0.30 even though MACD itself rises. The gap is narrowing because the signal line is catching up; falling histogram bars alone do not prove falling prices.
Momentum is measured after prices move
Both lines derive from historical prices and can cross repeatedly during a range. MACD has no fixed upper or lower bound, so a value of 3 has different significance on a 20-dollar instrument and a 500-dollar instrument. It is not a universal overbought scale. Settings and timeframes should accompany every comparison.
Check what actually crossed
When reviewing separately calculated MACD readings, write down the main line, signal line, histogram and their units for the same completed candle. Then inspect the available price chart for a change in peaks or troughs. Student Wyckoff Pro analyzes completed chart data; this article does not promise a MACD panel or automatic crossover service in the workspace.

Your next practical step
Inspect completed prices and distinguish a momentum change from a confirmed structural change.
